Best Known Methodes (BKMs)
Best Known Methodes (BKMs) used for and within photography.
  • Use Lens Protection (UV) Filter:
    • The lens is protected both during shooting and when handling filters, apertures, cable releases, etc.
    • They are easy and risk free to clean
    • The lens’s filter thread is protected when using color filters or lens hoods.
  • Use (Neck) Camera Strap:
    • Prevents the camera from falling.
    • Can be used as 3rd hand.
  • Use Lens Hoods:
    • Can prevent unwanted light incidence or loss of contrast.
    • The lens is protected both during shooting and when handling filters, apertures, cable releases, etc.
  • Use Color Filters for (panchromatic) Black & White Film:
    • When the light, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed allow, color filters can often improve the image grey tones.
  • Use Raw Data (or similar like 16-bit Tiff) when ever possible:
    • The greater bit depth and lack of preprocessing allow for better post-processing of any kind. Data reduction is always the last step you should apply when eve possible.
  • 120/220 film - Use an edge cutter
    • Use an edge cutter for the 120/220 film to round the film edges before spooling into the development spiral. This helps a lot for Jobo* spirals and likley similar. For 135 film, this is less needed and angle cutting with scissor when cutting of the film end is anyhow quicker. BTW: In past dedicated film end cutters were on the market.
Reduce own error sources.
  • Have one camera bag for camera ("type") being one set.
E.g. 1) Digital full frame camera, 2) Analog medium format camera, 3) Analog large format camera.
    • Have critical and affordable equipment in each camera back. E.g. addional storasge cards, backup batteries, cable release, "filter", "light meter", etc.
