{TITLEFUJINONLARGEFORMATLENSES}
Overview
Fujinon large format lenses are a highly regarded family of optics produced by Fujifilm for use on large format cameras, typically with film sizes of 4x5 inches, 5x7 inches, and 8x10 inches. They are known for their excellent optical quality, solid construction, and wide range of available focal lengths.
Key Characteristics:
  • Leaf Shutter: Like most large format lenses, Fujinon lenses come mounted in a leaf shutter (most commonly a Copal or Seiko shutter). The shutter is a self-contained unit that controls the exposure and is mounted between the front and rear lens elements. This design is necessary for large format cameras, which do not have a built-in focal-plane shutter.
  • Massive Image Circle: The most critical feature of any large format lens is its ability to project a large image circle. This image circle must be significantly larger than the film format to allow for camera movements (tilts, shifts, swings, rise, and fall) without the edges of the image vignetting or cutting off. Fujinon lenses are particularly known for their generous image circles, which provide ample room for these movements, especially with their wide-angle series.
  • EBC Multi-Coating: Many of the later Fujinon lenses, particularly in the CM-W and other professional series, feature Fujifilm's "Electron Beam Coating" (EBC) multi-coating. This advanced coating technology minimizes lens flare and ghosting, ensuring high contrast and accurate color rendition, even in challenging lighting conditions.
  • High Optical Quality: Fujinon lenses are widely praised for their sharpness, resolution, and overall performance. They are often considered on par with top-tier lenses from other prominent manufacturers like Schneider and Rodenstock, but they are often more affordable on the used market.
Fujinon produced several different lens series over the years, each with specific design goals and characteristics:
  • Fujinon W / NW / CM-W: This is the "standard" series, designed as a versatile all-around lens.
    • W Series: An early, single-coated series.
    • NW Series: A later, multi-coated version.
    • CM-W Series: The last and most highly regarded version of the standard series. These lenses are known for their exceptional performance, compactness, and modern EBC multi-coatings.
  • Fujinon SW / SWD: The "Super Wide" series, designed for wide-angle applications like architecture and landscape photography.
    • SW Series: A wide-angle design with a wide angle of coverage.
    • SWD Series: An improved, eight-element design with even wider coverage and a larger maximum aperture, allowing for brighter focusing on the ground glass.
    • Fujinon A: A very compact and lightweight series with a large image circle relative to its size. These lenses are popular with landscape and backpacking photographers who need to keep their gear light.
    • Fujinon C: This series is known for its extremely small size and light weight, often at the expense of a slower maximum aperture. The "C" stands for "Compact." These are highly sought after for field work and hiking.
    • Fujinon T: A telephoto series, designed to achieve a long focal length with a shorter bellows extension. This is useful for cameras with limited bellows draw.
    • Fujinon SF: The "Soft Focus" series, which was designed to produce a controlled soft-focus effect for portrait and artistic photography.
Fujinon's large format lenses are no longer in production, but they remain highly popular on the used market. They are valued by a wide range of photographers, from traditional landscape and architectural photographers to artists experimenting with the unique capabilities of large format. They are seen as a reliable and high-performing alternative to the more common German lenses (Schneider, Rodenstock), often offering a better price-to-performance ratio without compromising on quality.
