Frankenstein ZERO
Overview
The Frankenstein ZERO is a DIY large format camera with helicoid focusing. It is primary based on parts of the Toyo 45G* manufactured by Sakai Special Camera Mfg. Co. in Japan from 1977 till 2025. This camera being focused on wide-angle lens usage uses the standard frames of Toyo 45G* but replaced the rail-bellows "body" by a vertical shifting fixed body. Key Characteristics:
  • Large Format: The Frankenstein ZERO uses up to 4x5 '' (or 9x12 cm) sheet film, which is a very large negative size that provides exceptional detail and image quality, especially when making large prints.
  • Modular System: The Frankenstein ZERO is a modular camera. It can be converted to other formats, such as 6x7 or 6x9 cm, by adding the appropriate back. This system-based design allows the camera to grow with a photographer's needs.
  • Camera Movements: This is the most significant characteristic of the Toyo* 45G. As a view camera, it offers a wide range of movements on both the front (lens) and rear (film) standards. These include:
    • Rise: This movement enable the photographer to adjust the position of the lens and film plane relative to each other, which is crucial for correcting perspective in architectural and landscape photography.
  • Build and Weight: The Frankenstein ZERO is reduces the Toyo* 45G size and weight by combining the Toyo* 45G all-metal construction with a fiber body, making it very durable and robust.
In comparison to other large format cameras, the Frankenstein ZERO is compatible to the Toyo* 45G with a smaller Footprint.
