Nikon* L35AW AF
Overview
The Nikon* L35AW AF is a rugged, fully automatic 35 mm compact film camera introduced by Nikon* in 1986. The “AW” stands for All Weather, and it was essentially a waterproof and shock-resistant evolution of Nikon’s hugely popular L35AF compact series. It is often referred to as the Nikon Action Touch in some markets (especially the US). The L35AW AF is essentially a ruggedized, waterproof version of Nikon's popular L35AF2 camera.
Key Characteristics:
  • Waterproof and All-Weather: The main selling point of this camera is its robust, sealed body. It is rated to be waterproof down to a depth of 3 meters (about 10 feet), making it perfect for use at the beach, by the pool, in the rain, or during any adventure where a regular camera would be at risk.
  • High-Quality Lens: Despite being a "point-and-shoot" camera, it's equipped with a sharp 35mm f/2.8 lens. This is a fast, high-quality prime lens that delivers excellent image quality, especially in a compact camera.
  • Autofocus System: The camera features an active infrared autofocus system that works for "above-water" shooting. Interestingly, the autofocus can be disengaged for underwater use, where you would instead use a manual, zone-focusing system.
  • Simple Operation: The L35AW AF is fully automatic. It has auto-exposure, auto-focus, automatic film advance, and automatic film rewind, making it incredibly easy to use. The flash is built-in and can be manually switched on or off, giving the photographer some creative control.
  • Durable Build: The camera's body is made of a heavy-duty plastic with rubber gaskets to ensure its waterproof seal. This makes it a sturdy and reliable camera that can withstand a fair amount of abuse.
In summary, the Nikon* L35AW AF is more than just a waterproof camera; it's a high-quality, fully automatic, and durable compact camera. Its combination of a sharp lens, simple operation, and rugged build has made it a favorite among film photographers who want a reliable and worry-free camera for a wide variety of shooting conditions.
